Doug enlisted in the navy in October 1967 and went to Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois for basic training. He remained on this base for an additional 8 weeks of Electronics School. Bainbridge, Maryland was his next stop to attend 16 weeks of Radioman "A" School for communications training. His first duty station was at the Naval Communications Station, Sidi Yahia, Morocco, Africa for 12 months. Doug then spent approximately 22 months on the Admiral's Staff for the Commander of the Caribbean Sea Frontier, a communication station, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He received his Honorable Discharge in Washington, D.C. in August 1971. From 1976-77, Doug was in the Naval Reserves based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His unit served aboard the USS Milwaukee, AOR - 2 (a replenishment oiler ship) stationed out of Norfolk, Virginia.
