MISSION STATEMENT: The memorial will honor past, present and future veterans who have sacrificed so much in the defense of our country.
HISTORY: On Memorial Day 2012, a statement was made that Greendale was one of the few communities in Southeast Wisconsin without a veterans memorial. With that statement the initiative to build the Greendale Veteran’s Memorial was born.
On June 18, 2012 the initial organizing committee meeting was held and the Greendale Veterans Memorial Committee was born. The initial committee consisted of representatives of American Legion Post 416, VFW Post 10519, the Village Board and Greendale citizens.
During the summer months, members of the committee looked at a number of possible sites for the memorial as well as a couple of conceptual drawings for a proposed memorial.
In October of 2012 the first fund raiser, called Vet Fest, was conducted.
After much consideration the committee settled on the site at Southway and Broad St. as the most desirable site for the memorial. In November of 2012 the work began to secure the site for the memorial and a more detailed design for the memorial was initiated. Over the course of the next two and a half years the committee worked with various governing bodies within the Village to secure the site for the memorial. On September 15, 2015 the Greendale Village Board agreed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Greendale Veterans Memorial Committee to build the memorial.
Over the next several years, various fund raisers were conducted to raise the approximate cost to build the memorial (over $300,000). Two main factors help raise that amount – selling of bricks/pavers and a very generous donation from the Krainz Foundation.
The Ground Breaking Ceremony was held on May 18, 2019 with construction beginning on June 3, 2019. Dedication ceremony was held on Oct. 5, 2019.
