My name is Dennis Nork. I started working in Greendale in late 1967 at the Harris Barber Shop. It was located on Broad St. near where the current bakery is. There were 5 of us there. I loved being a barber & working there, but in March 1969 I was drafted. I had to leave my clean & sterile job & became a fighting soldier. Not what I wanted but my country had called me.
In Aug. 1969 I went to Vietnam & put in the 4th Inf. Div, Delta Co 1st of the 8th Inf. For the next year we operated in the central highlands "humping the boonies". We had to deeal with booby traps & I ran into one, a punji stick putting a hole in my right leg.. This was not the way it was suppose to be. I wanted so much to be in peaceful Greendale not in a jungle so far away.
I returned to the barber shop in 1971 only to find there were only 2 barbers working now. I was not needed. I joined the Milw. Police Dept. in 1972 & served 28 years with the city. Back to Greendale: In 2019 we bought a house in the M section & are so happy to be here & to being alive to talk about it. I thank God for this. I did receive a Purple Heart for my injury.
Thank you Dennis Nork
