Served with Company C, 37th Division, 145th Infantry in the Pacific islands during WWII. Received 2 Bronze stars and 2 Purple Hearts.
Wounded by a grenade in Bougainville in 1944 and stepped on an acid mine in Luzon in 1945 resulting in 3rd degree burns to both legs. Because of the severity of the burns he was brought back to the states and after a lengthy hospital stay at Great Lakes in Illinois, he was honorable discharged later that year.
