Fought in Bougainville and Manila in the Philippines. Came home with a large Japanese flag, full of Japanese writing, which was taken off the body of a Japanese soldier who had taken him (my dad). But, fortunately a fellow US soldier saw the attack and killed the Japanese soldier. Also, while in the Philippines, he contracted malaria. Was treated with Atabrine and suffered a side effect in which the skin on both hands sloughed off. This, of course, took him out of active duty and he spent time in a hospital.
