After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1955 as an electrical engineer,
George began a training program at Allis-Chalmers in West Allis; earning $2/hour. That
was short-lived as he was drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. After two
months of basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, George spent 22 months at Fort
Bliss, TX. He trained units to operate Nike surface-to-air missiles at sites around the
country.
A letter of commendation in his Army file recognized George in April, 1957, for
"Non-commissioned Officer" of the month. "Your battery commander selected you for
your outstanding appearance, leadership ability, performance of duty, and knowledge of
military subjects."
"You were selected for your ability to answer questions asked by the (Soldier of the
Month) board, in a forthright and intelligent manner," the letter read. "In addition ... , you
have shown a great deal of enthusiasm in participating in the Battalion athletic program.
You were a member of the post volleyball team and were selected as this battalion's
outstanding basketball player." In May, 1957, George completed his service, and
returned to Allis-Chalmers where he designed large induction motors.
