Worked in the aft eng room of a destroyer out of Newport, RI USS Myles C Fox DD829. General quarters station was aft gun mount main deck mission gunfire support & plane guarding with USS Enterprise USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Being 19 years of age it was quite an experience leaving home traveling to Newport, Rhode Island boarding a ship leaving on a cruise to Vietnam stopping in various ports on the way. Such as; Rodman, Panama Canal Zone Pearl Harbor Hawaii ... Yokosuka, Japan Subic Bay and Cebu City, Philippines Islands ... Kaohsiung, Taiwan Hong Kong ... Singapore Malaysia ... Cochin India Aden ... Athens, Greece ... Naples Italy ... Barcelona, Spain ... Gibraltar ... Punta Del Gada, Azores. After being in the USA a bit, we left on another cruise going to the equator, Guantanimo Bay Cuba, going through the Suez Canal and stopping in the following ports; Greece, Naples, Yugoslavia, Agusta Sicily, Malta, Malaga, Ishmir Antel Turkey, Rota Spain, and my two years are done. Around the world cruise one and a half times, seven seas following Ferdinand Magellan, and becoming a Shellback. We also pulled into 2 ports in Vietnam Qui Nhon and Nha Trang.
